Howard Bardwell
{DIES ? 2 - CAR COLLISION}
Howard Bardwell, 48, of Gladwin died Saturday night following a two car collision at the
corner of M-61 and M-30. Bardwell, who appeared to be unhurt in the accident, was brought to
the Gladwin Hospital in an ambulance with the other occupants of the cars but was dead on
arrival. An autopsy showed tath he died of suffocation, according to Coroner Donald Hall.
Bardwell [missing text] the accident and was reported to be in ill health, he said.
The mishap occurred about 9 p.m. officers said, when Flossie I. Nettleton, of Gladwin, was driving
south on M-61. Her car was hit in the right side by one driven by Muriel S. Hergenreder, of Saginaw,
investigating officers of the sheriff department said.
Riding with Mrs. Nettleton were Bardwell, Emily Hunemuller, of Clare, owner of the car, and Rolland
Wilson, of Rt. 2, Gladwin. They received minor cuts and bruises. In the Hergenreder car were Carol
Mielke, of Saginaw, Polly Switzer, of Gladwin, and Janice McCotrib, also of Saginaw. They suffered
bruises. Funeral services for Bardwell were held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home.
The Rev. William J. Hassold officiated and burial was in Highland Cemetery under the auspices of the
Beaverton V.F.W.
Born in Hope on Dec. 15, 1913, he was married to the former Stella Cameron on March 6, 1943. A
lifetime resident of Gladwin County, he was employed by Dow Chemical Company. A veteran of World War
II, he was a member of the Beaverton V.F.W. and St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife,
Stella; two sons, Elmer, of Swanton, Ohio, and Ronald, with the U.S. Air Force, Terra Haute, Ind.; a
daughter, Mrs. Nora Simrell, of Indianapolis, Ind.; two step-sons, William Cameron of Mt. Morris, and
Ronald Cameron, of Gladwin; three step-daughters, Mrs. Ruth Rose and Mrs. Iva Bender, of Flint, and Mrs.
Rosemary Trumble, of Gladwin; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bardwell, of Shelby; a brother Donald, of
Kalispell, Mont.; five sisters, Mrs. Ruth Bradley, of Gladwin, Mrs. Mae Fruchey, of Midland, Mrs. Iva
Fenton, of Lake St. Helen, Mrs. Eva Rowe, of Flint, and Mrs. Claudette Robinson, of Marion; and seven
grandchildren.
