Gladwin County Obituary/Death Notice
 
Nancy Baker

   Nancy (Bates) Baker, 97 of Clare died May 11, 2006 at the MidMichigan Medical Center in Clare. She was born in Doddridge County, W. Va. March 23, 1909, the daughter of the late Myrtle and Ervin Bates. Nancy grew up in West Virginia.

   She married Lawrence “Jake” Baker on July 17, 1930 in Ashley, West Virginia. They moved to Michigan and raised their children; Edward, Arthur, Jean and Ann in Gladwin. Nancy lived in Gladwin for over 50 years before moving to Clare in 1991 to be closer to her family. Nancy was a wonderful cook, not only for her family, but also at Bill’s Steak House in Gladwin where she worked for many years. Her specialty was homemade egg noodles.

   Nancy is survived by two children, Arthur (Glenda) Baker of Clare, and Jean (Harold) Ballard of Midland; 13 grandchildren; 19 Greatgrandchildren; six Greatgreat- grandchildren; and her sister Jeweline Messenger of Lakeland, Fla. Nancy was predeceased by her husband Jake in 1964, her son Edward in 1970, her daughter Ann Ploegstra in 2005, son-in-law Gary Ploegstra in 1985, her brothers Guy, Bert and Frank Bates and sisters Mamie Fink and Lulu Ash.

   Funeral services were held May 15 at the Stephenson- Wyman Funeral Home in Clare, Pastor Dennis Bromley officiated. Burial took place in Highland Cemetery in Gladwin.
