Gladwin County Obituary/Death Notice
 
Milton Alward Sr.

   He was born March 14, 1919 in Gladwin to George and Hazel (McGuire) Alward. He married Elizabeth Vanest in Gladwin in 1940 and she preceded him in death in 1991. He then married Betty Koehler in Gladwin in 1993 and she preceded him in death in 2001. Alward was a lifetime resident of Gladwin County. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He established Alward Incorporated in 1952 and operated it until he retired in 1979. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gladwin; the Gladwin County Fire Department from 1946 until 1963 when he became the Gladwin County Fire Chief, retiring in 1979; Gladwin County V.F.W.; a charter member of Gladwin Eagles Aerie 3292 and Knights of Columbus Gladwin; and he was also past president of Gladwin Rotary.

   Surviving are three sons, George (Polly) Alward and Lawerance “Corky” (Maria) Alward, both of Gladwin, and Bruce (Barbara) Alward of Seattle, Washington; one daughter, Kathryn (Rick) Haan of St. Petersburg, Florida; 10 grandchildren and 15 Greatgrandchildren; two brothers, Lawrence “Buck” (Hetty) Alward of Gladwin and Joseph (Alice) Vanest of Glen Ellen, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by both wives; his brother, Dennis; and a grandson, Jason.

   Funerals services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gladwin with Rev. Fr. Jeff Donner officiating. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Gladwin. Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 8 from 2-9 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin. Memorial contributions may be made to Gladwin County Fire Department.
