Pfc. Dennis W. Alward

Pfc. Dennis W. Alward, 25, was killed in action in Korea, according to a telegram received Monday by his brother, Milton. Dennis had previously been reported missing since Feb. 12 and the message stated that he was killed on that day. It read as follows:

"The Secretary of the Army has asked me to express his deepest regret that your brother, Pfc. Dennis W. Alward, was killed in action in Korea, Feb. 12, 1951. He was previously reported missing in action the same date. Confirming letter follows. Ed F. Witsel, major general, U.S.A., adjutant general of the army."

A member of the Second Infantry Division, the family believes that Dennis was in the Wonju area when he lost his life. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. George Alward, of Sage township. Two brothers, Milton and Lawrence, of Gladwin, also survive him. Dennis was born in Sage township November 11, 1925. He attended the rural school there until entering the Gladwin Rural Agricultural School, and graduating in 1943.

He was discharged from the army in February, 1950 and placed on the reserve list but was recalled to service last October and sent to Japan Jan. 20. The next day he was flown to the Korean front. Dennis and his brother, Lawrence, operated a pulpwood business before re-entering service last fall.
